Description
Summary:This article reports on the initial conclusions of a field survey carried out on the Isle of Batz in 1983, as part of ethnotextual research initiated at the University of Western Brittany and inspired by the work of Jean-Claude Bouvier (Oral Tradition and Cultural Identity). In the course of the census, which determined the number of Breton-speaking islanders, their breakdown by socio-professional category and their geographical distribution, it became apparent that the respondents used an extremely specific grid to situate their neighbors in the island society. Four « groups » were identified, each corresponding to slightly different uses of the languages spoken on the island at that time.
