description Today’s mothers belong to the first generation of women with a majority of its members in the labour market, whereas their mothers belong to the last generations for which being a housewife was the norm. Today’s mothers perceive themselves as a transitional generation, different from their own mothers but, at the same time, very different from younger generations and their daughters; difference which exists in spite of a common thread that connects these generations of women. Today’s working mothers are facing new problems, but they find in the preceding generation the help and simpathy that allow them to work and have children. Grandmothers are often willing tohelp their daughters, partly because it is only through them that they can fulfil a desire of independence. There is in this sense a strong projection from the older to the younger generations. The article focuses on images and perceptions of the intermediate generation regarding those that come before and after, as well as on the mechanisms of reciprocity and solidarity between them.
