description The prefixes per- and prae- express a very high degree of the adjective, usually analyzed as equating to the absolute superlative. The aim of this paper is to explain the meaning of each of them with the “notional domain” as defined by Culioli (1999). It appears that per- depends on the “type”, so its intensifying function is related to scalarity. By contrast, prae- depends on the “attractor”, which creates a single instance, defined by itself, since quality and entity qualified are very closely linked. Therefore, prae- does not seem to imply scalarity, but appears to be related to saliency from a cognitive point of view.
