Summary: | This study intends to analyze the Indigenist policies in province of Bahia during 1820s and 1860s. The two regions chose – the south counties and extreme west – represented, in that time, boundary zones and places in whose advance of population, colonization and economic exploration did its first steps. There, authorities and agents involved with problems of expansion and occupation had to appropriate of savage Indian concept, frequently named “gentio”, often accompanied of adjective “wild” and commonly viewed constituting “barbarian hordes”. Not only terms were utilized: that classification brought the re-edition of practices of confrontation against those Indian groups, expedients that merged with settlement strategies. |
