Summary: | In her recently
published book D. Reitzenstein (fn. 2) follows the communis opinio and
understands the terms lykiarcheia bzw. lykiarches as
meaning only the incumbent or former archiereus. By contrast, the
author of this present article holds the view, which he had already expressed
in a previous paper (see fn. 4), that the lykiarcheia commenced
as early as with the taking over of the federal grammateia and
continued beyond the archiereia. Direct candidature for the archiereia was
not possible. This interpretation has consequences also for the dating of the
individual archiereis' terms of office. |
