description Cendrars’ carefully constructed self-portrait as a poet vagabond was more successful than the image of the mystical recluse he replaced it with in the 1940s. After distinguishing between actual journeys and imaginary ones, on the sea and in the sky, we’ll look at the material conditions of Cendrars’ early travels and the psychological expectations of his attraction to a vaguely defined “elsewhere”. In his poems, stories and interviews, geographical and social wandering engages an imaginary world haunted by the figures of the dangerous doppelganger and necessary separation, and by the desire for otherness and transformation. In this respect, Brazil plays a major role in his inner journey: three trips in the late 1920s and the poetry collection Feuilles de route, written during his 1924 crossing, reflect his encounter with modernist poets as well as his ambiguous critique of travel writing and lyrical exoticism, achieved through montage writing.
