description On the basis of the integral turbulence characteristics observed at the Melpitz measuring field as a part of the SANA project in 1991, the measuring conditions at the site were found to be mainly influenced by inhomogeneities of the surface roughness. Also present was a weakly developing internal boundary layer caused by a change of the surface roughness between bare soil and dry grass. The importance of using different tests to classify the conditions of the underlying surface is emphasized for measuring sites where fundamental research is planned.
