They were cautious, even reluctant, to share common grounds with the “progressive Christians”, a small minority that had emerged from the catholic community in the fifties. As the Parti socialiste turned into a major political force, the arrival of progressive Christians sparked internal controversies. While the party presented itself as a “catch-all party”, catholic militants often encountered several forms of defiance, ranging from irony to open hostility.
