| description | Since 2016 and the parliamentary coup against president Dilma Rousseff, the erosion of the rule of law has increased in Brazil. The process of impeachment, conducted in the name of public morality and the fight against corruption but without an evident juridical base, weakened the political structure of the country in many ways. These events continued, as ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was imprisoned on April 5th 2018 for corruption in connection with the Lava Jato operation. Despite this, Lula remains first in all the polls related to the next presidential election (scheduled for October 2018). This article, by way of an analysis of these events, offers keys to better understanding the juridical and political dimensions of the current Brazilian crisis. |
