Description
Summary:INTRODUCTION: Thyroid cancer is the most common malignancy of the endocrine system. Papillary carcinoma (PC), which has a very good prognosis and has many defined variants, constitutes a large part of thyroid malignancies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathological type, age and sex distribution of thyroid tumors in and around the Van province. METHODS: Histopathological types of tumours with age and gender of patients diagnosed with thyroid tumors in our department between 2010 and 2017 were reviewed in the study retrospectively. All data were evaluated using statistical analyses. RESULTS: The 733 cases who are diagnosed as thyroid tumor had a mean age of 43.6+-14.5 years and a female-to-male ratio of 5.3. Of the 635 cases diagnosed with a malignant thyroid tumour, 93.2% of them had PC, 3.3% had follicular carcinoma, 2.2% had medullary carcinoma, and 0.6% had anaplastic carcinoma. Of the cases with PC, 39.5% of them had papillary microcarcinoma (PMC), 33.3% had follicular variant, 20.1% had classic variant, 5.2% had oncocytic variant, and 1.5% had diffuse sclerosing variant. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The distribution of the histopathological type of tumours and patient age and gender in our study was consistent with those reported in the literature. However, the patients with PMC had a female preponderance and the patients with diffuse sclerosing variant of PC had a higher mean age.
