Summary:The notion of cataphoresis is commonly used to account for certain uses of the definite article. For example, in a sentence like “Lise m’a montré la maison qu’elle aimerait avoir”, the definite article “la maison” is said to be cataphoric “since, instead of taking up an element of the context (anaphoric value), it announces one”. Joëlle Gardes- Tamine thus points out the correlative relationship that seems to link the presence of the definite article house to that of the relative determinative that follows this same noun. She is merely espousing a frequent viewpoint, which will be discussed in this paper.
