Summary: | In 2016 we will publish the 160th issue of Hérodote. Who could have predicted this in 1976? Indeed, the beginning was difficult for we had to face the hostility of many geographers, whether they were from the Left or the Right. The foundation of Hérodote benefited from the intellectual atmosphere in the Centre expérimental de Vincennes (which later became the University Paris 8), from publisher François Maspero, and from the work of Yves Lacoste, who, thanks to his geographical reasoning, denounced the American strategy of dykes bombardment in the Red River delta. The following catch phrase was then demonstrated: « the main use of geography is war ». Hérodote’ team has always been convinced that geographical reasoning is most effective when it combines physical and human elements, and we refuse to describe geography as a social science. In 1981, a paper by Yves Lacoste about the geographical work of Elisée Reclus placed geopolitics as the central axis of the journal. After horrified reactions of some geographers such as Roger Brunet, geopolitics appeared to be a major element of geographicity. |
