description | The study describes the human and social characteristics of the school teacher over a period of time of special importance in the history of schools, the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. In the field of State Schools special emphasis is made upon the economic, cultural and psychological misery which the school teacher endured; showing not only the negative image that society had of him but also the scant official attention that was paid towards his training and low salary. We will also talk about the effort with which the teaching profession fought to be state school teachers, difficulties with social integration and the contradictions between what was required of the profession and the problems derived from teaching. In Public Schools the teacher appears principally attached to the idealogical problems. Over the years society's esteem for the teacher grew, his training improved as did his professional way of work, reaching the highest standard and acknowledgement in the Republican Period. |
