description | This paper takes a literal reading of the last two Sueños of Francisco de Quevedo, El mundo por de dentro and El sueño de la muerte, as a basis on which to examine a generally-ignored aspect of the composition of these two stories – namely, use of the first person. Invoked from the outset ostensibly as a representation of the author subject to an inconstant and shifting desire, the protagonist provides a kind of continuity in these satirical writings, consisting in a journey through a kingdom peopled by figures (figuras) characterized by oddness and hyperbole. These entities are in fact the real core of the work and Quevedo likes to diversify the way that they appear. In this way the desire that is initially evoked establishes the language as its primary object; the text is then simply the systematic deployment of a logic which constantly shifts from a common usage to a detached, comic use of verbal expressions and figures. And finally, Quevedo’s writings stretch the limits of tolerance with their endless repetition of the same formulae and figures, albeit the return to the waking world progressively reveals itself as a necessary closure to this cycle of literary journeying. |
