Summary:This article will discuss how the teaching of history in as experiential school in the Federal District of the 30’s contributed to the production of school knowledge and teaching practices that shaped an ideal citizen, not only in the view of the school but also of the Brazilian nation which aspired to modernization at that historical moment. Firstly this article highlights the importance of cultural studies for the investigation of history of education. Then, it shows the emergence of history as a discipline in mainstream education in Brazil. Lastly, it makes clear how the teaching of this discipline evolves at Escola Argentina serving the purpose of disseminating the knowledge, behaviour patterns and certain qualities that shaped the school day-by-day.
