Summary:The following article presents the results of a research about the characteristics of families in the neighborhood Belén Rincón in Medellin. It uses a quantitative methodology. It is a descriptive study. The main strategy to collect information was the survey. The results focus on the family type organized by strata, family income, gender, age, and kinship type distribution. Also it was made a general balance of the families which were a part in the sample. In conclusion, the nuclear family is surpassed by the extended family in this neighborhood; in these families some risk factors are remarkable: domestic violence and aggression. Single parent family is very common. it is pertinent to inquire more about other family types.  © Revista Colombiana de Ciencias Sociales.
