description | In the scholarly literature, the Iberian manuscripts are normally divided into the northern tradition (with the characteristic upward position of the signs) and the southern one (with the horizontal ductus), the latter (starting only in the 11th century) being much younger. However, recent researches based on a scrutinized examination of all Iberian sources, have thrown new light on the entire corpus of visigothic manuscripts. Considering the historical development, interrelationship between various ecclesiastical centres, as well as actual function of the notated manuscripts (or single neumatic insertions), the connections between the northern and southern tradition, as well as between single manuscripts appear to be more intricate and complex. |
