description | Differences between childhood, adolescence, youth, adulthood and old age are part of a social construction which may vary in different historical periods and according to the organization of social life. In contemporary society age has acquired a traits of connecting people much more then an ascribed variable of the individual person.Stratification by age is a product of the social structure but at the same time it is also a way to understand composition and changes of the social structure itself. In other words, it is society which gives a role to each age through a social and cultural definition. Thus, it is worth to look at the demographic stratification from two points of view: from a social definition of ages as well as from an individual perception of belonging to a specific cohort.Categories like childhood and adolescence have been created rather recently and are already inadequate since it is difficult to say when childhood ends up and adolescence begins. That’s why the concept of “pre-adolescence” has been created.Through the years the traditional structure of the family has changed – at least in Western world – from an “authoritarian” model based on father authority to an “emotional” model with parents over-protecting their children. Thanks to this transformation the family is not any more the place where children learn the way of living as instead appears to be the place of protection and mutual affections. This transformation produces several negative consequences particularly in the relationship between family and school intended as agencies of socialization. |
