Trade-off of rapid recrystallization and mechanical property improvement of Ti-6Al-4V alloy

A short-time (50 s) joule heating method was proposed to refine α phase and improve the mechanical property of Ti-6Al-4V alloy used for implant screw. At 650 °C, the recrystallization behavior is enhanced by the rapid dislocation migration and arrangement. The alloy with high strength of 1109 MPa an...

description A short-time (50 s) joule heating method was proposed to refine α phase and improve the mechanical property of Ti-6Al-4V alloy used for implant screw. At 650 °C, the recrystallization behavior is enhanced by the rapid dislocation migration and arrangement. The alloy with high strength of 1109 MPa and high elongation of 13.5% are obtained due to the residual dislocation strengthening and the fine α phase (0.79 μm). Although the heating time is very short, the average of α phase is apparently grow to 0.85 μm as the temperature increases up to 800 °C, and {10–10}α texture and dislocation intensity are apparently decreased. The strength is rapidly decreased to 1026 MPa while the elongation increases to 16%. Keywords: Joule heating, Microstructure, Strength, Ductility
