| description | Using a case of domestic theft tried in 1869 in Saint-Etienne, France, this article analyses the intimate relationship established in their domestic work settings by the two young women charged with theft, as well as the surrounding social structures. In which conditions and how could powerful solidarities emerge between minorized individuals ? Which skills and know-how could two young women sharing a situation of legal, social and political inferiority develop ? Legal archives are explored through the lens of critical lesbian theory, notably the concepts of « lesbian continuum » and « compulsory heterosexuality » theorized by Adrienne Rich in 1980. Crafted through a minoritarian outlook and experience, these tools shed light both on the past lives and experiences of two young women and on the heterosexual functioning of a specific society, namely the white French metropolis in a period of booming capitalist industrialization. |
