Description
Summary:The article gives some biographical information on Louis Amable Petit before considering his main book published in 1868. Neo-mercantilist, Petit assumes that money is not only an instrument of exchange, but primarily an object of accumulation for itself and as a way of accumulation of other assets: it is preeminent wealth. This position led him to reject the Say’s law and defend the theory of “balance of trade”. The reckless pursuit of monetary accumulation inevitably leads to overproduction and the repetition of commercial crises. This situation is exacerbated by free trade.
