Description
Summary:The paper sets forth the data available in the literature on the prevalence, pathogenesis, and clinical features of cognitive impairment (CI) in diabetes mellitus (DM). It presents the results of the authors' own studies of cognitive functions in patients with type 2 DM in relation to the presence or absence of a clinically significant vascular disease. It was established that CIs were mild and moderate, equally marked in both patient groups, which allows consideration of DM as an independent risk factor for cognitive dysfunction. Inadequate regulation of voluntary activity was a leading neuropsychological mechanism of CI in DM. The pathogenesis of CI in DM is largely due to the development of vascular complications. Methods for the prevention and treatment of CI in DM are proposed.
