| description | Interculturalism has become an inescapable commonplace of health care projetcs in the last two decades, a time where “culture” seems to be omnipresent. Nevertheless, some voices have warned about the risks of this exuberant presence. Through the ethnography of medical attention to hunger and malnutrition in eastern Guatemala, this paper attempts to move the debate from the multiculturalism to the concept of culture that is achieved in their definitions. Interculturalism can result in a rhetorical project or in a new paradigm of digestion of difference if we do not specify the spaces and meanings of the concept of culture used. The place of culture is not that of the ghostly or ideal encounters about health, but that of the specific rules that agencies implement, the relations between health systems, the production contexts and the embodiment of the politics of representation. |
