Summary:The development of luxurious meals in Rome during the Eastern conquests from the 2nd century BC created in Roman society a debate about the use of pleasures. Roman morality of the Republican era defended moral sobriety and resisted the influence of the luxuria Asiatica. The choice of food represents an identity issue and can be a way of affirming the attachment to Roman values. Medicine and morality then define ways of eating healthily that must be analyzed in the light of Roman standards in the Republican and Imperial eras.
