Description
Summary:The Superagui National Park (Guaraquecaba-PR) was created in 1989 and expanded in 1997 on various traditional communities without consultation. Members of the community Barra do Ararapira, report as their cultural and production practices were affected by the creation of the Park. Residents are concerned because the construction of the Management Plan started and the community participation was limited to a brief consultation to assess how these affect the conservation objectives of the park. On the other hand, the community was largely responsible for the creation and expansion of the park through the fight to defend their territory and through their traditional knowledge of species previously unknown to Western society. Residents also questioned the scientific practices of managers, discrediting these are the most effective to preserve the region. From this, it is questionable who holds the right to manage this territory.
