description | Peter Medawar criticizes the 'unnatural sciences' for her belief that measurement and numeration are activities worthy of praise in themselves; her belief that facts come before ideas and that a voluminous compilation of facts yields general laws and principIes which appear natural; and their faith in the effectiveness of statistical formulas. Thus, he criticizes psychologists and economists for trying to capture in a single number -the IQ (Intelligence QuotientJ or the GNP (Gross National Product)- phenomena as complex as human intelligence, human welfare, or people's moral disposition. Are intellectual differences transmitted genetically or through education? Medawar claims that "there is a genetic influence ... even as education and training have an important role. n But the problem is complicated "by the tendency of the opposing sides to take political postures that don't leave them
freedom of movement. Thus, in the philosophy of great conservatism there is a canonical belief that the cradle of aman -his genetic constitution- determines absolutely his faculties, his destiny, and whatever happens to him in life; and no less characteristic of Marxism is the idea that, as men are born equal, aman is what his environment and education make bim . The first of these beliefs is at the root of
racism, fascism, and all attempts to 'make Nature an accomplice in the crime of political inequality', and the second falls into the fallacy of human gene tic equality'.
