description In this article the author analyses the conflicts that resulted from the practices of the local politics in the primary education system at Brazilian Amazon (1870-1889), particularly in the heart of Pará and Amazonas. It becomes clear from the official discourses and from the complaints by parents and inhabitants from small localities, published in newspapers, that the local election politics interfered directly in the daily school life. Despite the fact that several regulatory initiatives took place during the 19th century, in an attempt to protect the public school system from the clientalism of the Brazilian authorities, the negative influence of such local politics remained until the end of the Imperial period, as highlighted by the reports issued by the school principals and inspectors.
