Summary:The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence to take the first ball on the partial and final score in male water polo. The 48 matches disputed by the team’s participant in the 2003 Water Polo World Championship, celebrated in Barcelona in 2003, were recorded. In particular, the samples were 192 actions of beginning of every game period. The observational methodology was applied. Statistically significant relation was not obtained, between to take the first ball possession and the partial score (p > .05). Were found statistically significant differences in the influence to take the first ball on the partial score in the fourth period (÷2 = 6,906, g.l. = 2; p = ,032). Were found a significant association between the numbers of periods started with ball possession and the final score result.
