description Based on statistical analysis, household semi-structured interviews and exploratory talks with land-use practitioners, this article questions the effects of suburbanization on small towns. Used to structure rural daily life spaces, small towns of Toulouse metropolitan area are now supporting urban sprawl, extended from the city center to the medium cities of this metropolitan area. Their population growth results from a residential choice and disturbs the logical working of places that have now to respond to new needs. As a consequence, the previous economic fabric changes: Toulouse metropolitan influence causes a growth of employment not only because of residential economy but also of ambitious economic plans. More attractive and dynamic, these small towns become a strengthened structuring center: periurban daily life can now take place around them and outline a new relationship with city and urban life.
