description Through four ecclesiastical authors, Bautain, Dupanloup, Gay and Landriot, this article shows how the Catholic Church envisages the relations between husband and woman in the marriage, and what it thinks of the appropriate sphere of the woman: care of the children and the maintenance of the house. The woman is thought to be pious, and she must sanctify her generally sceptic husband, she has to protect himself against the dangers of the worldly life, in particular balls and bad readings. The vision of the woman is globally traditional, but these authors take their distances with the feminine "weakness" and advance on the contrary a strong woman, capable of exercising a real influence on the society.
