Description
Summary:the impact cancer had on the adolescent patient and the resources used to cope with the disease were the purpose of this research. The methodological approach was qualitative in order to generate grounded theory of information collected. Semi-structured interview was applied to three adolescent cancer survivors, patients at Children’s Hospital José Manuel de los Rios in Caracas. Results indicate that these adolescents suffered the disease as a transformative experience that involved a series of changes in body image, personal lifestyle and family dynamic. To overcome the disease, these patients used both external resources, such as support from their families, from hospital staff as well as friends from school, and internal resources, such as religion, resilience and other personal strengths. The disease led the adolescents to a maturing process, which helped them to give a new meaning to life and future plans.
