description | The importance of protecting the archaeology of former Second World War camps in France is still not fully appreciated. During recent renovation works at ‘La Muette’ in Drancy (a social housing development) graffiti was discovered on plaster blocks, enscribed by Jews interned at the camp. The discovery of the graffiti was only possible because the site has been designated as a ‘Listed Building’, requiring all of the original fabric to be protected. The recommendation to classify the site was controversial when first proposed in 2001, but today there is greater recognition of the importance of protecting these sites as a part of our historical, architectural and urban design heritage. ‘La Muette’ provides an good example of the dialogue that can be established between archaeologists and historians, providing a greater insight and understanding of past events and contributing to the historical records and memories of the Second World War camps. |
