description | This review describes the features of the systems to ensure the restoration of calcium homeostasis of hippocampal neurons during ischemic injury. High levels of intracellular Ca 2+ , glutamate excitotoxicity activity and the formation of free radicals during ischemia are a major damaging factors, leading to further damage to hippocampal neurons. Understanding the mechanisms able to prevent the development of damage today is key for the development of post- and preconditioning neuroprotective strategies. |
