Description
Summary:In an attempt to give an overview of theoretical and historical aspects of Mannerism in literature and art, the author begins by establishing its poetical principles. Afterwards he also discusses the elements of Mannerism which are found in Marin Držić’s poetry, pastorals, comedies, tragedies and conspiratorial letters. Particular emphasis is placed on the interpretation of Grižula due to the strong presence of Mannerist elements in this comedy. The “spirit” of Mannerism consists of various features: mixing of reality and illusion, exaggeration, unease, anguish, autobiographic elements, perspective, parallelism, simultaneousness, transience, repentance, eclecticism, ambiguity, complexity and mystery. These features are demonstrated on a number of selected examples and their effect is described as “a cumulative Manerist gift”. This notion includes the interpendence of subjective, social and chronological intersections. The correlations between real and unreal events determine different modes of expression.
