Summary: | The main objective of this paper is to examine the present stage of Brazilian democracy from a theoretical-historical perspective, in which the influence of historical-structural factors in the country¿s political culture is highlighted. It also evaluates elements related to contemporary forms of social malaise (corruption, patrimonialism, among others) and their impact on generating cynicism and distrust among Brazilians. Based on these concepts, the paper tries to identify what political values and norms are internalized by Brazilians and produce their empirical memory. Relying on data from a survey analysis, the results indicate that Brazilians show a tendency to naturalize negative political values producing an empirical memory that devalues democratic principles.
