description In this article we delved into the interrelationships between nature and culture in the work of naturalist traveller Manuel Arruda da Câmara, from analytical reading of his writings botanical dedicated to the “sertões” of Captaincy of Portuguese America during transition Colony-Empire. I hope to gather and concatenate traces that throwing light on the European political and social context behind the race by the exploitation of natural resources in favour of the Portuguese Crown's trade, scientific and exploratory trips as possible applications financed of conceptions naturalism-utility, influenced closely by conceptions “neofisiocratas” then fashionable. This will allow us to detect the oddness of observations and experiences of Arruda, opening field for future investigations on interrelationships of corporations with the nature of “sertões” from fragments of natural landscape descriptions in order to establish an environmental and human scenario of captaincy Northeast colonial purposes of the end of the sevenths century and the first decade of the eighth century.
