description The issue of multilingualism has always been in demand. In Ukraine, the problem of bilingualism is relevant and is currently particularly acute: the vast majority of the population are Ukrainians by nationality, but not all Ukrainians prefer their "lawful" Ukrainian language. The article deals with the linguistic situation in one of the most difficult region for sociolinguistic research - Odesa Oblast. The functioning of the Ukrainian language among the students of the schools of the Shyriaieve district of Odesa region was traced in the article on the basis of the sociolinguistic experiment. The respondents' attitude towards the choice of the language of communication was revealed. The students’ choice of the language for watching television programs, reading books, communication in everyday life and social sphere was characterized. The motives of respondents’ choice of the languages of communication were determined. The results of the survey were compared on the background of recent events in the state. Observing the results of the survey of different years, we see noticeable changes towards the Ukrainian language, which allows us to conclude that the recent events unfolding gradually in Ukraine, unfortunately, don’t change the self-consciousness of Ukrainians for the better as fast as desirable. Slowly but the system of inferiority towards the Russian-speaking population is leveled off.
