description The word “syncretism” is a volatile one in Catholic theology – but an important one as well, especially when it comes to the Caribbean and surrounding areas, whose Catholicism is deeply intertwined with native traditions. Many in the universal Church look upon such mixtures as dubious at best, while others hold an inclusivist stance. Theologians are, in some places, seeking to replace the term syncretism with inculturation. Attempting to set what passes for acceptable and appropriate forms of syncretism is essential in a Church that calls itself “catholic,” hoping to take a positive approach that seeks what can included, rather than what must be kept out, all in the service of the faithful.
