description | A mark of Donald Preziosi’s achievement in fields of art history and visual culture is the degree to which it can be a struggle to keep up with the work that he has published in the later period of his career, while still trying to work through the implications of writings from decades past. My own reflections on Preziosi settle on this condition, with a particular emphasis on the approach to the study of material culture outlined in the 1999 book Aegean Art and Architecture, co-authored with Louise A. Hitchcock. The approach to objects and interpretation outlined in the book is presented here both as a formative influence on my own work, and as a point of reference that is still worth attending to in contemporary accounts of materiality and material culture. |
