description | The development of electroconvection in electromembrane systems is a factor that increases the efficiency of the electrolyte solution desalination process. The desalination of the solution, manifested by a change in the distribution of the ion concentration, can affect the mechanisms of development of electroconvection. The purpose of this work is to study the electroconvective flow developing in the desalination channel under various desalination scenarios. The study was carried out on the basis of a mathematical model of the transfer of binary electrolyte ions in the desalination channel formed between the anion and cation exchange membranes under the action of DC current. An analytical estimation of the threshold current density reflecting the conditions of the system transition into a quasi-stationary state has been obtained. The chronopotentiograms of the desalination channel and the thickness of the electroconvective mixing layer are calculated for both pre-threshold and supra-threshold values of the current density. |
