Description
Summary:The lekythos, at first a perfume vase and later a vase for the dead, indicates the transformation of the expression of the attic funeral practice, whose modalities are being debated. After reviewing the most important researches and the different approaches to this form, we come back to the litterary ideas about the use of perfumes and lekythoi in the funerary ritual, then to the appearance of lekythoi in the funerary iconography, and finally we consider the offerings in the graves. The funerary lekythos with a white background is the symptom of new practices in force since the beginning of the 5th century with the black-figured lekythoi whose typological evolution and its numerous offerings are more a symbolic status rather than a functional task, as a sign of devotion from the members of the oikos.
