Description
Summary:Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease of unknown etiology which is characterized by the formation of granulomatous inflammation in various organs and tissues, most commonly in the lungs and lymph nodes. Glucocorticoids are the therapy of choice for the initial treatment of symptomatic disease, but their prolonged use is associated with significant toxicity. Alternative therapies that reduce glucocorticoid use are also available. Fatigue and depression are often present in patients with sarcoidosis. Their occurrence in practice is mostly underestimated, although it is related to a lower quality of life. As fatigue and depression cannot be assessed using objective measures, the use of validated questionnaires is recommended. They enable the detection and monitoring of fatigue and depression related to the underlying disease and may indicate the need for appropriate therapy.
