description The fauna of Diptera in the hypoarctic zone of Taimyr Peninsula and high mountains of Altai was studied and compared. It was established that in both faunas Brachycera Cyclorrhapha are dominant at all taxonomic ranks (family, genus, species); Nematocera is the second dominant group, however far behind Cyclorrhapha;and Brachycera Orthorrhapha is the third, subdominant, group. The same families of Diptera in each three suborders constitute the core of species richness both in the North and in the high mountains. In Nematocera these are Chironomidae, Tipulidae and Mycetophilidae. In the suborder Brachycera Orthorrhapha the absolute dominants are Dolichopodidae and Empididae. In Brachycera Cyclorrhapha the dominants are Syrphidae, Muscidae, Scathophagidae and Anthomyiidae. The same families of Diptera have the lowest taxonomic representation both in the North and in the high mountains. For example, only one species was found in the families Bibionidae, Cecidomyiidae, Drosophilidae, Hypodermatidae, Pipunculidae, Sciomyzidae and Therevidae.
