Description
Summary:Listening comprehension is one of the linguistic skills to be considered in English language teaching. The present paper is aimed at designing exercises to strengthen the development of listening skills in first year medicine students at the University of Medical Sciences of Cienfuegos. In order to conduct this research, it was performed the analysis of the official documents governing the discipline so that we could identify weaknesses in the existing programs. Instruments of qualitative methodology were applied such as surveys to teachers for the diagnose of learning needs of future professionals and a diagnostic test for first year medicine students to determine the major challenges in the domain of communicative skills. Triangulation of these results justified and guided the proposal described in this paper. It was validated by a group of specialists in the Languages Department who agreed on its successful implementation during the 2011-2012 accademical course, which has showed significant progress in the mastering of listening skills.
