Description
Summary:This article explores Goya's aesthetic choices in the series of engravings The Disasters of War and the singular narrative of war as disaster, in particular through the representation of bodies and death in the midst of mass massacres. The artist experimented with an original narrative system, combining image and text, breaking with the models of neo-classical art. His aesthetic choices represented a break with the way in which the work of art of his time was viewed: they were political and profoundly ethical. In a productive anachronism, the work continues to speak to our own times, prophetically representing the effects of a death drive that is as topical and immanent as ever.
