Summary: | From scientific issues that have emerged in the French ergonomics tradition about musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), we question the concepts of power to act and leeway of workers in a psychological analysis perspective of prevention. For this purpose, we define firstly what we mean by activity, power of act, and corporal and social leeway of workers. These definitions are based on the work of the clinic of activity, and more broadly in a historical-cultural perspective. Power of act result from integrated conflicts in activity, while leeways of workers, which we consider as functional system elements, are the means or the result of power of act. Combining voluntary gestures to functional systems, we propose to design gesture as an psycho-bio-social entity. Then, and using these definitions, we rely on an intervention in an industrial laundry to analyze an extract from a crossed self of three laundresses. From this intervention, we show how the leeway of worker are the product of the power to act. More precisely, it is the co-construction of a frame with professionals, allowing them to organize themselves individually and collectively to develop their power to act, which expose them to look for any new resources, new or otherwise unusual links forgotten and later recovered in the action, and create new links between leeway. In the last part, we conclude by establishing assumptions about the MSD prevention, specifically linking gestures, power to act and leeway.
