Summary: | The article analyzes the political and intellectual role played by the sociologist Georges Friedmann in constructing the sociology of work in Latin America, especially in Brazil, from 1954 to 1961. Through the analysis of a series of exchanges between Friedmann and Latin American social scientists as a representative of some international organizations that were in charge of promoting the development of the discipline in the region (UNESCO, Flacso, ISA), the article reconstructs some of the leading institutional and intellectual projects that resulted from these relations, especially the creation of the Centre of Industrial Sociology and of Work (CESIT) at the University of São Paulo and research on the industrialization impacts. This article is supported by research carried out in archives in France and Brazil and the analysis of Friedmann’s two books, Problèmes d’Amérique latine (1959, 1961). |
