Description
Summary:Migration studies have focused on the relational dimension of the migration process, but the subject has rarely been systematically studied using social network analysis. Based on the analysis of the ego network of and interviews with Spanish young people and adults who settled in Toulouse between 2004 and 2014, this article shows the diversity of network configurations, a diversity due to mobility and the life course. Over the months and years of residence in Toulouse these people have undergone a reconfiguration of their entourage which is multi-located mainly at the place of origin and at the local level. This reconfiguration’s strong points are the break with certain links in the society of origin but also the activation of new relationships, as well as the intensification of new and old links because of mobility. This diversity is explained in the article by examining the characteristics and circumstances experienced before mobility, such as the details of their lives before migrating and the characteristics of their pre-migration contacts.
