description The use that is made of the notion of metalanguage in semiotics differs from its previous uses in logic and linguistics, even if it is influenced by them. It presents itself and answers to different questions from those of logical analysis or linguistic description. The present study will focus on those problems, related to the effectiveness of semiotic analysis and to the relations that this analysis establishes with its object. At first, we present the inaugural case in this matter of Système de la Mode (1967). From that, a second part sets three theoretical considerations inherent to the semiotic concept of metalanguage: (i) the status of metalanguage under semiotic criteria (ii) the specificity of the metalinguistic analysis, (iii) the metalinguistic formalization vs. the epilinguistic alternative.
