Because by the names compiled and examined, we reach not only the roots and affixes of the
name but also information about the historical development of Turkish language and the roots
of Turkish culture. Furthermore, place names enable to have idea about the history of the region
which is examined. Researches related to place names are important to reveal the cultural
heritage. We can find information in place names about historical events related to people
settled in the region, significant figures in the region, folk heroes, and folk poets. Also, place
names can be used as a reliable base in history studies.
Unfortunately, studies on place names in our country are at an early stage. On the other
hand, in recent years, studies on place names have increased as much as forming an independent
discipline in Europe.
Place names in Geydogan village which is a village in Tasova district, province of
Amasya are dealt with in this study. Traditions of Geydogan village where is one of the ancient
settlement places are deep rooted and stil alive. Many words belonging to different languages
exist in the village which hosts many words used since old Turkish. Place names in Geydogan
village are as various as its words. Some are originated from old Turkish, some are originated
from middle Turkish and some from different languages. |
